Tip Tuesday!

Tip Tuesday! We wanted to share an article about how to have a sensory friendly 4th of July.

1. Prepare your child for the day
Utilize a visual schedule or show your child clips of fireworks or parades (whatever activity you will be doing).

2. Bring favorite and familiar items

3. Establish a safe place
Establish a place your child could go to such as underneath of a blanket, in the wagon covered by the blanket, or in a small tent

4. Engage in heavy work activities
Heavy work is calming to the body. Actions like pushing, pulling, lifting, chewing and squeezing are all meant to engage the body and, in a sense, organize the nervous system.

Ideas include giving your child gum or licorice to chew, having them load the car and/or pull the cooler or wagon.

5. Bring along sunglasses and noise blocking headphones
Noise blocking headphones and sunglasses can prevent over stimulation

6. Stay mindful of the situation
If your child becomes overwhelmed you may need to put them into a safe situation or leave to go home.
